Taste of Mango
Yieppe, the Indian summer has begun!! And it means Mangoes..

Summer Season in India is synonymous to Mango Season. Every state has its own variety and they are so proud of the different types. Some are meant to be eaten ripe whilst some can be eaten raw. A hard core Mango lover knows what does it mean to have a box of Mangoes delivered to your door steps in UK !!

Yes, I was fortunate to review a box of Mangoes from Red Rickshaw, previously known as I-Tadka. I really didn’t know what to expect when mangoes are delivered online.. But let me tell you, they were just soo good.

The box had 3 varieties of Mangoes – Alphonso(King of Mangoes), Badami and Kesar . Some were ready to eat, whilst some took about 2-3 days to be ripe. So perfect!

Taste of Mangoes

That first aroma of Alphonso mangoes when inhaled closely, just transported me to my childhood. Growing up in Mumbai, eating Mangoes, enjoying mango delicacies was something we looked forward every year. My mum and dad used to place in a haystack to ripen and as kids, we were always impatient to wait for them to ripen.

Absolutely Nostalgic – Thank you Red Rickshaw!!
Red Rickshaw does mail orders for sending out mangoes now.. so do check out their Mango shop for the wide variety.

A little about these varieties of Mangoes

ALPHONSO – Also known as AApoos, comes from the state of Maharashtra. THese mangoes are considered among the superior variety in terms of flavor, sweetness and richness This variety got its name after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general and military expert who helped establish Portuguese colonies in India.

BADAMI – This variety of Mango is a close cousin of Alphonso in terms of flavor and texture. These Mangoes are grown in the southern state of India – Karnataka. Hence they are also called as Karnataka Badami.

KESAR – This variety of Mango got its name due to its saffron skin tone. Saffron in Hindi Language means KESAR. It is another popular variety of mango among cooks as its juicy and with very little fibrous flesh.

Other popular Mango Varieties from India are Banganapalli, Tothapuri, Malgova, Mallika etc.

SO what do we actually do with the Mangoes, apart from eating them ? Mangoes could be used as a thirst quencher or as a summer dessert. You could even enjoy a summer salad with them!!
