Taste the comfort of Britain with our easy and delicious bubble and squeak recipe. Perfect as a side dish or brunch option, this dish is a tasty and money-saving way to transform leftovers into a family favourite!
Side dishes are really important on any holiday table. Take a look at many more in our Christmas collection.
My easy bubble and squeak recipe
My family loves the comforting taste of bubble and squeak, a traditional British dish often made with leftovers from a Sunday roast or Christmas vegetables tray bake and mashed potatoes.
Whether it’s a quick and easy weeknight dinner or brunch option, bubble and squeak never fails to satisfy. Not only is it easy and delicious, but it’s also versatile and money-saving.
I’ll be showing you two ways to make this dish:oven baked bubble and squeak casserole, and as bubble and squeak cakes.
Why you’ll love this recipe?
Easy peasy – This recipe is British and will be a welcome addition to any holiday table. Simply mash the ingredients together, shape, and bake them.
Versatile – Along with mashed potatoes, you can add in as many roast veggies as you like. I love using brussels sprouts, savoy cabbage, or even leftover root vegetables. If there are no leftovers, you can make this recipe from scratch. Along with these, you can add any of your favourite ingredients like cheese, herbs, and eggs.
Cook in many ways – You can bake, pan-fry, or air fry Bubble and Squeak.
Serve for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner! They are often served on the holiday breakfast table the day after the grand feast on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
My Simple Bubble and Squeak recipe – baked in the oven/ air fryer
Mix the mashed cold potatoes, savoy cabbage, any other cooked vegetables along with butter, salt and pepper.
Transfer the mash to a casserole dish. Top with cheese and bake in the 200C preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.
Bubble and Squeak Cakes
Bubble and squeak cakes is one of my favourite ways to make bubble and squeak. These cakes are perfect for sharing as individual portions and are easy to grab.
To make these cakes, shape the mixture into patties. Then, they can be baked, pan fried, or air-fried. They can be made into one large frittata style sharing bubble and squeak or small cakes.
The serving options are endless and they pair nicely with tomatoes, air fried mushrooms, baked beans, air fryer sausages, and fried eggs for breakfast.
I find many similarities between Indian Aloo Tikki and bubble and squeak cakes. Both are made with mashed potatoes and allow for many add-ins.
How to serve Bubble and Squeak?
These bubble and squeak cakes are a wonderful addition to any holiday table. But they are also a tasty side dish for meals all around the year.
- Serve as a side dish alongside a roast dinner or your holiday table.
- Serve with meat-free sausages and onion gravy for a heartier meal.
- It is delicious with baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, and fried eggs for a delicious brunch option.
Can you buy bubble and squeak?
Bubble and squeak is made at home with leftover ingredients, so it is not commonly found pre-made in stores around the world. However Bubble and Squeak mash is easy to buy at superstores across the UK. Flavour and season the mash to your liking, top them with cheese and cook.
What’s bubble and squeak made of?
Traditionally Bubble and Squeak are made with leftover roast veggies from Christmas celebrations or Sunday roast. The main ingredients are cooked potatoes and cabbage, which are mashed together and then cooked in the oven or on the stove top. Other roast vegetables, such as carrots, brussels sprouts, or parsnips, can also be added to the dish.
How does the dish Bubble and Squeak get its name from?
The dish gets its name from the “bubbling” and “squeaking” sounds that the ingredients make as they are cooked together.
