Air fryer edamame beans are one of my favourite quick vegan snacks to make. Simply take out the frozen edamame, toss with seasoning and air fry until roasted. With just five ingredients, this delicious snack is ready in only about 15 minutes.

I first tried edamame with chilli garlic salt at a Wagamama in the UK. They served whole soybeans (mukimame) straight in the pods, and I was fascinated by how something so simple could taste so good. Ever since, I’ve been experimenting with different ways to cook edamame at home. (Salt and Chilli edamame - my new favourite)
My go-to method is using the air fryer to roast frozen whole edamame, just like air-fried chestnuts. The pods turn lightly crisp on the outside, stay tender inside, and hold the seasoning beautifully. This works just as well with shelled edamame, too!

What is Edamame?
Edamame (pronounced eh-duh-maa-may) are immature green soybeans, harvested before they fully ripen and popular in Japanese cuisine. In the UK, they are often sold as soya beans or edamame soya beans, either in pods or shelled. While the pods are not eaten, the beans inside can be boiled, steamed, roasted, or air-fried and served with salt or other seasonings.
👩🏻🍳Sandhya's Top Tips for the Best Air Fryer Edamame
- There is no need to preheat the air fryer.
- Do not thaw the edamame. Add them directly from frozen to the air fryer basket.
- For extra flavour, finish with a dash of chilli flakes, toasted sesame seeds, flaky salt, soy sauce or a drizzle of sesame oil.
- Serve immediately for the best texture.
- To make air fryer edamame (without pods) or mukimame air fry for 8-10 minutes. They turn golden brown and chewy.
📋Ingredients
(Detailed ingredients and quantity are mentioned in the recipe card below)

- Frozen edamame (in pods): I use plain frozen edamame beans in shells, widely available in supermarket freezer sections. They may also be labelled soy beans or soybeans in pods. If you are using fresh edamame pods, simply reduce the cook time.
- Garlic powder and onion powder: they are my go-to seasoning mix.
- Any Neutral oil: Just enough to help the seasoning cling to the edamame pods. I use sunflower oil or avocado oil. Even a light oil spray works.
- Sea Salt: Add to taste. But if your edamame is already pre-salted, you don't need to add it to the seasoning mixture.
Variations
You can add any of the seasoning ingredients below to make roasted edamame.
- Red pepper flakes or chilli flakes add a bit of heat if you enjoy spice.
- A squeeze of lemon or lime juice.
- Spice blends - curry powder, garama masala or smoked paprika
- Soy Sauce or Tamari Sauce
🔪How to Make Roasted Air Fryer Edamame?

Step 1: Add frozen edamame, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and oil in a mixing bowl.
Tip:Add any of your favorite seasoning mix like curry powder, taco mix or keep it simple with salt.
If the beans are already pre-salted, leave the salt out.

Step 2: Toss the edamame together with spoons.

Step 3: Transfer to air fryer basket. Air at 200°C (400°F) for 10-12 minutes.

Step 4: Shake the basket at halftime. I air fried mine for 10 minutes. If you like it more roasted, add another 2-3 minutes as desired until slightly brown and crisp on the outside.
Serve warm. Squeeze the tender beans out of the shell as you eat. Season with more sea salt if you like.
Top Tip: At halftime, if you like, toss the edamame with soy sauce or tamari and air fry again.
🧂Storing Air Fryer Edmame in Fridge
- If you have leftovers, store the roasted edamame in pods in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat in the air fryer, air fry at 180°C for 2–3 minutes, or warm them briefly in a pan.
- I don't recommend freezing them after air frying.
Serving
We love serving these air-fried edamame as a protein-rich snack anytime of the day. It is also a delicious side for honey soy fried rice, tofu fried rice or a topping for a tomato gnocchi traybake.
I also mix them into my Christmas Coleslaw or Kachumber Salad for texture.
