I make these air fryer sweet potato rounds and crispy potato slices regularly. The real secret isn’t the seasoning. It’s how thick you slice them and my secret ingredient! Once you know this, you’ll never make soggy sweet potato slices again.
This is such an easy air fryer recipe!
I make many air fryer sweet potato recipes - baked whole sweet potatoes, Mexican sweet potato cubes, air fryer sweet potato chaat and more. If I had to pick, sweet potato slices win every time. They’re also my daughter’s favourite, which makes them a regular in our house.

👩🏻🍳 Sandhya’s Top Tips for Making Crispy Sweet Potato Slices
Everyone knows the perfect crispy texture as soon as they bite into one. Here are some of my top tips and tricks.
- Slice evenly: Cut the sweet potatoes into ⅛-inch thick rounds and not 1/16-inch thick. (At 1/16 inch, it turns into crispy sweet potato chips)
- Use a knife or Mandolin slicer: If knife skills aren’t your thing, a mandolin slicer works brilliantly.
- Always preheat the air fryer: Just like a traditional oven, you should preheat the air fryer, too. Skipping this can lead to unevenly cooked sweet potato slices.
- Use rice flour for maximum crispiness: This is my go-to ingredient for restaurant-style crispness. I use it for onion bhajis and potato rounds. It helps the sweet potato rounds stay partially crispy even as they cool.
- Don’t overcrowd the basket: Arrange the slices in a single layer with no overlapping. Overcrowding causes steaming rather than crisping.
- Air fry just before serving: Sweet potatoes tend to soften quickly once cooked, so I air fry close to serving time for hot, crispy sweet potato rounds.
📋Ingredients

- Sweet potatoes – I use orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. Any variety usually works.
- Spices – I use a combination of hot paprika powder, salt, ground black pepper, and garlic powder for these air fryer sweet potato slices. You can substitute the paprika with Kashmiri chilli powder if you prefer.
- Rice flour(Optional) – This is my secret ingredient that I never skip. It gives the sweet potato rounds a crispy texture, even after they’ve cooled. While it’s possible to make sweet potato slices without rice flour, I highly recommend using it for added crispiness.
- Oil – You’ll need a little oil to prevent the sweet potato slices from sticking to the air fryer basket. I use sunflower oil or olive oil.
🔪 How to Slice the Sweet Potatoes?

Before slicing, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and scrub the skin to remove any dirt. Whether you peel them or not is a personal choice.
Set the mandolin slicer to ⅛-inch(0.3 cm) thickness and slice the sweet potatoes into even rounds. This is my favourite method, but be very careful when using a mandolin.
Alternatively, you can slice them into evenly thick rounds using a sharp knife.
According to my daughter, the slightly thicker sweet potato rounds taste so much better when air fried than the ultra-crispy ones I make when sliced at 1/16-inch. Since then, I stick to ⅛-inch thickness.
🔪How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Slices Recipe?

Step 1: Add the sweet potato round slices to a mixing bowl.
Drizzle with oil, then sprinkle over salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika or chilli powder.

Step 2: Toss until every slice is well coated with oil and spices.
I use my hand to coat the sweet potato slices.

Step 3: Preheat the air fryer to 177°C (350°F) for 3 minutes. Arrange in the air fryer basket in a single layer.

Step 4: Air fry for 15–18 minutes.
Flip halfway through, until the slices are golden on the edges and cooked through in the centre.
If needed, cook in batches. The second batch usually cooks a little faster as the air fryer is fully hot.
🍽 Serving Suggestion
I like to serve straight away while the air fryer sweet potato slices are hot and crisp, with vegan burger sauce or tomato ketchup.
But when I want to serve fancy,
- As a snack or appetiser: I like to pile the air fryer sweet potato slices onto a plate and serve with creamy dips such as boom boom sauce, yogurt garlic sauce, creamy coriander sauce, sriracha mayo, or sweet chilli mayo.
- For an Indian-style fakeaway on Thursday nights: Serve these crispy sweet potato rounds alongside comforting Indian dishes like black dal, chana masala, and a refreshing vegan mango lassi.
- With festive vegetarian mains: These air fryer sweet potato slices make an excellent side dish for Christmas and entertaining. Pair them with roasted broccoli and cauliflower cheese, whole roasted air fryer cauliflower, or lentil shepherd’s pie.

❄️Storing
In the fridge: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
In the freezer: These air fryer sweet potato slices also freeze well. Freeze them in a single layer on a baking tray first, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag and store for up to 3 months. Defrost in refrigerator overnight and reheat in the air fryer until hot.
Reheating: When ready to eat, reheat them in the air fryer at 177°C (350°F) for 4–5 minutes to bring back some of that crispiness.
❓Recipe FAQ's
Soggy sweet potato slices usually happen when the air fryer is overcrowded. When slices touch, they steam instead of crisp. Give each sweet potato slice some space and cook in a single layer for perfectly crispy edges.
You do not need to parboil sweet potato slices before air frying them.
For perfect sweet potato slices, I recommend slicing the sweet potatoes into rounds about ⅛ inch (0.3 cm) thick. This thickness allows the slices to cook evenly while staying tender in the centre with crisp edges.
If you slice them any thinner (around 1/16 inch), you’ll end up with crispy sweet potato chips instead of slices.
Slice sweet potatoes evenly and toss with a little oil, salt, and your favourite spices. Spread on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake at 180 °C for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway, until tender and lightly golden.
