About this Zucchini fries recipe

Are you wondering What is Zucchini Fries? Let me tell you zucchini fries are just delicious and surprisingly quick and easy appetiser.

Zucchini sticks are dipped in egg, then in breadcrumbs and air fried to perfection. This recipe uses not a single drop of oil! How wonderful it is, isn’t it?

With Zero cooking time on the hob, these fries can be made in less than 30 minutes from prep to finish.

I have made these fries in my brand new Instant Pot Duo Crisp Air fryer. So I call it the Instant Pot Zucchini Fries too.

You can make this recipe in any other air fryer too. Cooking time and temperature will nearly be the same. If you don’t own the air fryer, you can make Baked Zucchini fries too.

Serve them with your favourite dip or even tomato ketchup! Whatever you fancy!

Ingredients

You only need 5 Ingredients excluding salt & pepper to make these guilt free snacks.

Zucchini or Courgette – I prefer buying similar sized zucchini to make these fries. You can cut them into discs or make sticks.

Flour – Plain flour works well for this recipe. But if you prefer Almond Flour, you can use it too.

Egg – 1 large egg or 2 medium egg will be sufficient. Beat them well with a fork or a whisk and set it aside. This is required for dredging the fries.

Bread Crumbs – Panko Bread crumbs or Golden Bread crumbs works well. I had golden bread crumbs handy, so decided to use them.

Seasoning – I prefer Italian seasoning or Mixed Herbs seasoning for flavoring the breadcrumbs. For more flavors, you can add some garlic powder and paprika too.

Parmesan Cheese is optional. If you like it use it in your breading mixture.

Salt & Pepper to taste!

How to make Courgette Fries (Zucchini Fries) Step by Step

Coat the Zucchini in flour – Add the flour to the Zucchini. Mix with fingers to coat them well.

Season the Bread crumbs mixture – In a medium bowl, add bread crumbs, Italian seasoning, salt & pepper. Fork to combine.

Prepare the dredging station – Zucchini coated with flour in one bowl, beaten egg in the second bowl and bread crumbs in the third bowl.

Dip the Zucchini sticks – Dredge the zucchini sticks into the beaten egg, shaking off the excess, then into the golden bread crumbs mixture to coat well. Repeat the process with the remaining zucchini sticks.

Layer in Air fryer basket -Arrange the zucchini sticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer or over 2 levels. ( Use the stainless steel layer that comes along with the Duo Crisp + Air fryer )

Air fry – Place the Air fryer Lid on the cooker base. Select the AIRFRY programme. Adjust the +/- keys to adjust the Time and Temperature to 400 F/ 200 C and 10 minutes. Press Start. Check between 7-8 minutes if they are crispy enough and golden. You may need 7- 10 minutes depending upon how thick or thin the zucchini sticks are cut.

Remove the Zucchini fries from the air fryer after the air frying cycle ends. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately with dips of your choice.

Serving Suggestions

Air fryer Zucchini fries are super crunchy, crispy and quite addictive too. You just can’t stop with one! Serve these healthy snacks with boom boom sauce or chipotle sauce or vegan burger sauce.

Have you tried dipping your crispy fries into Cucumber Raita or a mint yogurt dip? You got to try it – they are quite good too.

Tomato Ketchup also works really well. My little one loves the fries with some mayo and tomato ketchup together.

Pro Tips to make Zucchini Fries

It is extremely important to keep the thickness consistent for your fries. If Zucchini is cut too thick, they won’t be fried / baked to perfection. If they are cut thin, Zucchini fries will be soft and soggy.

While Dredging, use one hand for wet ingredients and the other for dry. This is extremely important so that the bread crumbs do not get soggy.

Golden Bread Crumbs are already flavoured with paprika and turmeric. If you are using Panko crumbs, you can season them well with turmeric, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to cut Zucchini Fries?

To start with wash the Zucchini and dry them. Slice the top and bottom part.

Using a sharp knife, half the zucchini and then cut them vertically about 1/2 an inch thick. Stack them one above the other and then further slice into strips just like fries.

Do I need to preheat my Air fryer?

Well the answer is No! You do not need to preheat the Air fryer. In this case, cooking time for the dish can be slightly longer than when you preheat it.

It also makes it easier to arrange your meal in the air fryer basket without getting hot / burnt.

If you decide to preheat the air fryer, cooking time needed might be slightly lesser. I have tried so many recipes where I used to preheat the airfryer. But honestly I really could not justify for most of the dishes.

Is Zucchini Fries Healthy?

Sure, these are healthy, if you make a switch to Almond Flour instead of Plain Flour and use Panko Bread crumbs instead of Golden bread crumbs.

How to reheat Zucchini Fries in Air fryer?

Pop the fries back into the air fryer basket. Select the Air fryer temperature and time to 180 C for 2 – 3 minutes. Once the air fryer cycle ends, remove the fries from the basket and serve hot.

How to make Zucchini Fries in Oven?

Prepare the Zucchini Sticks using the dredging technique.

Line them on a baking sheet line with parchment paper.

Bake in a pre heated oven at 180C for 28-30 minutes until golden brown. Do not be tempted to pull them out too quickly as the baked zucchini fries can get soggy quickly.

A big hit recipe. Everyone loved it. I cut it big thicker so I cooked 5 min extra than what’s in the recipe instructions. I used panko breadcrumbs and Philip’s XXl airfryer. Will do again tomorrow.
