Start your day with this easy apple banana smoothie. It is one of those everyday drink recipes I make on repeat. Made with just three ingredients, this simple vegan apple banana shake works well for breakfast or as a no-fuss afternoon snack.

two mugs of vegan apple banana smoothie served with sliced banana topping.

This is one of my husband’s favourite vegan apple banana smoothie recipe, mainly because it’s naturally sugar-free. And all the sweetness comes straight from the fruit.

If there’s one smoothie combination I always recommend for beginners, it’s this apple banana, milkshake-style blend. And if you’re not a fan of bananas, you’ll love my cinnamon apple smoothie instead.

💚Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • You only need 3 simple ingredients and 5 minutes
  • Naturally sweet — no added sugar
  • Apples and bananas are easy to find year-round in UK supermarkets
  • Easy to customise with oats, nut butter, or seeds if you like extras
  • No Yogurt , No Ice cream
  • Beginner-friendly and you really cannot go wrong
  • Perfect for breakfast, a quick snack, or post-workout

👩🏻‍🍳Sandhya's Top Tips

  • Use ripe bananas for the best sweetness and texture. Spotty bananas will make the smoothie even sweeter. Don't throw them away.
  • Peel the apples just before blending to prevent oxidation.
  • If you’re not using a high-speed blender, peel the apples for a smoother texture.
  • Serve immediately for the best flavour and freshness.

📋Ingredients

(Detailed ingredients and quantity are mentioned in the recipe card below)

ingredients to make 3 ingredient vegan apple banana smoothie recipe.
  • Apple-I like using fresh, sweet apples such as Gala apples. You can use Fuji, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp too. Peel the apple if needed, especially if you’re not using a high-speed blender.
  • Banana-Ripe bananas work best here. Spotty bananas will give you a naturally sweet and creamy apple banana shake. If you’re using frozen banana, there’s no need to add ice cubes.
  • Milk-I usually use unsweetened oat milk for this recipe. You can use Almond milk, Soy milk or even regular dairy milk.

Variations

  • Add a handful of ice cubes if you like your smoothie extra cold
  • For a creamier texture, you can add Greek yogurt
  • If you prefer a higher-protein smoothie, add your favourite protein powder
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. It’s delicious and gives apple pie vibes
  • Add oats / chia seeds for extra fibre and to make the smoothie more filling

🔪How to Make Apple Banana Smoothie?

apple banana oat milk and chia seeds in a blender jar.

Step 1: Add the sliced banana, peeled and chopped apples, milk and ice cubes to a blender jar.
Top Tip: If you like you can also add optional add-ins like hemp seeds, chia seeds, protein powder, peanut butter or rolled oats too.

banana smoothie with toppings.

Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy. Adjust thickness of the vegan smoothie with more milk if needed. Pour in glasses and serve.

I like to add toppings like sliced banana, cinnamon powder and chia seeds. Its completely optional.

❄️Storing

This apple banana smoothie is best enjoyed straight away.
If needed, you can store it in an airtight jar with a lid in the fridge for up to 24 hours. The smoothie may separate when stored and slightly discolour due to oxidation, which is normal. Just give it a good shake before drinking.

Notes

  • I recommend using sweet apples like Gala for this smoothie. You can also use Fuji, Red Delicious or Granny Smith.
  • Bananas are naturally sweet, so I don’t add any sweetener. If needed, you can add sugar, maple syrup, or honey to suit your taste.

Variations

  • If you use whey protein powder, feel free to add it to the smoothie for an extra protein boost.
  • For extra creaminess, you can replace part or all of the milk with Greek yoghurt.
  • Add a splash of pure vanilla extract to add extra flavour. It works beautifully with apple and banana.
  • Add chia seeds for added fibre.
