About this Air fryer Hasselback Potatoes

These crispy potatoes look fancy but let me tell you they are super easy to make. You don’t need any special skills to make this.

Yes, It does take a little more effort than classic roasted potatoes or baked potatoes but they are totally worth it.  The sliced and fanned-out potatoes are totally delicious on their own as an appetizer or serve with your mains.  I love to serve Hasselback potatoes in Buddha Bowls too!

My daughter loves these mini Hasselback with cheese for her Snack time and given her a chance she would love to have them with Baked Beans to make it a meal.

We all love these Hasselback Potatoes because its

History of Hasselback Potatoes

Do you know why are they called Hasselback potatoes? A chef in Stockholm invented and popularised this Swedish potatoes recipe in his restaurant named Hasselbacken, back in the 1950s. Since then this impressive way of serving Potatoes and other vegetables were popular.

How to Cut Hasselback Potatoes

Don’t shy away thinking it is almost impossible to cut it perfectly. There is nothing to loose as the fallen apart potatoes also taste so good whether they are airfried or oven baked..

The Potatoes – mini or large are sliced vertically all the way through but they are still intact and connected at the bottom.

The Trick to achieve the perfect Hasselback is to use Chopsticks or use a wooden spoon.

For mini potatoes,Place the potato one at a time, on a wooden spoon and cut across intervals. Spoon stops you from cutting the potatoes through.

For large Potatoes, Place Chopsticks or wooden spoon handle on either side of the potato. Now cut the potatoes in intervals thinly, accordion style. Do not cut the potato all the way through and the slices are still connected at the base..

Flavoring ideas for Potatoes

I have flavored my Hasselback potatoes with garlic, salt, and pepper.  But there are plenty of seasoning ideas that you can sneak into the sliced and fanned-out potatoes.

  1. Fill the potatoes with herbs – oregano or parsley or rosemary, garlic
  2. Rosemary and feta cheese with potatoes are a  classic combo, just like Smashed Potatoes.
  3. Season with Indian-inspired spices like ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric, chili powder, garam masala, and a squeeze of lemon juice for a curry twist.  Just like Bombay Potatoes.

Ingredients you will need

You only need 5 Frugal Ingredients to make this flavourful Vegan side dish. This recipe is easy to customise to suit your palette. Add more seasoning / herbs if you like.

Arrange the potatoes in the Airfryer basket and AIR FRY at 180C for 20 minutes. Remember to turn potatoes around once, so that the Hassel back potatoes cook evenly.

I have made this recipe in Philips Viva Airfryer and Instant Pot Duo Crisp Airfryer and they came out crispy and delicious. Check out both the images below – Hasselback Potatoes in Instant Pot Airfryer and in Philips Viva.

For additional flavors, season again with oil/butter, herbs, garlic, salt & pepper just before serving.

Don’t have an Airfryer, no worries at all. You can make these Swedish Potatoes in the oven too. Place potatoes in a single layer, cut side up, onto the prepared baking sheet, and bake for 40-50 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Crispy Hasselback Potatoes are a perfect side dish to your Sunday Roast, Date Nights, or even Holiday Roast. We even love to serve them along with Naan bread and a Curry.

They are delicious in a Vegetarian Lunch Bowl along with spiralized vegetables, beans and salad.

I like that you are using baby potatoes instead of the large ones. Small size would be so good, and this looks delicious too. I am going to try this soon, as I did not wanted to make big ones. Thanks for sharing at #cookblogshare

What a great idea to use your air fryer for hasslebacks. They’ve been on my list of things to try for forever, but I’m always put off because they sound tricky. You’ve made it sound a lot easier than I thought, so I really must have a go and in my air fryer too.
