About this 5 minutes Indian Onion Salad recipe

Ever wondered about how to make the onion salad that is served with poppadoms and green chutney in your local Indian restaurant?

It is really super quick and easy! Made with fresh ingredients, this homemade Onion Salad recipe takes only 10 minutes. First, slice the onion into whole onion rings slices or half slices, and then soak it in a bowl of ice-cold water for 5 -15 minutes.

The soaking process helps in retaining the crunchiness and mellowing down the sharpness of the onions.

Drain the water and then, toss with onion with spicy, lemon dressing and herbs.

It is very similar to Kachumber Salad minus the cucumber and tomatoes. This is a no-oil salad recipe, so it’s healthy and can be enjoyed guilt-free.

We often make a small batch of this salad, or tomato onion salad to pair with our Indian meals. Because it tastes best when served fresh.

This sliced salad can have many variations too. Add ground cumin, black salt, or even chaat masala powder.

What is Onion Salad?

Indian Onion Salad is an easy side dish with raw onions, spices, lemon juice, and coriander leaves. It is popularly known as Laccha Pyaaz in India and is served with North Indian curries, or with a tandoori sizzler platter. Although you can also serve them with burgers, Kati rolls, Wraps and use them in recipes that call for Pickled Onions.

This salad can be made with red onion, white onion, brown onion, or sweet Vidalia onions. Any variety of onions will work.

We often serve this Fresh Onion Salad with traditional South Indian Molagootal too and it’s delicious. Leave out the chaat masala and ground cumin for serving with south Indian recipes.
