Something as simple as Mashed potatoes will taste awesome if you really follow the right steps. This creamy, moreish side goes so well along with your favourite pie, steak or a slow-cooked casserole this Thanksgiving / Christmas.

Tips for making BEST GARLIC MASHED POTATOES
Pick a waxy variety of potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold in USA and Maris Piper or King Edwards in UK.
Keep your Potatoes HOT. For a creamy mashed potatoes, the key is to keep the potatoes hot before mashing.
Do not use a hand blender or a blender jar to mash the potatoes smooth. You will end up with glue like paste. Using a masher or a ricer, mash them smooth.
Add you Fat First and add them again at a later stage. Add the butter first to the pot followed by potatoes and mash it. Add the remaining butter just before serving.
Taste as you mash the potatoes. You really do not want to over season it.
Infuse with garlic, rosemary and whatever you love more. It definitely tastes a lot delicious than the simple plain mashes potatoes.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THE PERFECT MASHED POTATOES
Garlic Mashed Potatoes are my daughter’s favourite. She can have the whole bowl to herself and still ask me for more. She rates this instant pot side dish as mumma’s BEST ever mashed potatoes EVER.
A simple dish as Mashed Potatoes will have that WOW factor in flavor, if you make the right moves.
WEIGH THE POTATOES – Measure out the potatoes. You will need 1/2 a pound per person.
SCRUB & CLEAN – Scrub the potatoes well and wash them.
PEEL & CUT – Peel the skin of the potatoes and quarter them.
ADD TO STEAMER BASKET – Now place the quartered potatoes in the steamer basket. Pour 1 cup of water to the Inner pot of Instant Pot. Place the steamer basket.
PRESSURE COOK HIGH – Secure the lid, turn the valve to sealing. Pressure Cook HIGH FOR 8 MINUTES. Quick pressure release. Drain the water from the pot and allow the potatoes to sit in the steamer basket.Remove the steamer basket and set it aside.
MELT GARLIC & BUTTER – Press SAUTE on your Instant Pot. Melt Butter and add the garlic. Stir them until just infused. Press CANCEL.
ADD MASHED POTATOES – Add the potatoes when they are still warm. Using masher or ricer, mash until creamy and smooth.
ADD SECRET INGREDIENT – SOUR CREAM in my secret ingredient that gives this mashed potatoes a WOW FACTOR!! Season with salt and pepper as needed
TASTE & SEASON – Season with more salt as needed. Its always good to add salt in stages rather than one go.
SERVE WARM Garlic Mashed Potatoes a blob of butter and chives.
If you are making Mashed Potatoes with garlic in a manual pressure cooker, the method is similar as the Instant Pot. Cook the potatoes for 3 pressure whistles and turn the cooker off. Allow them to release the pressure naturally.

Let’s face it, a few Questions that’s always in mind when using Instant pot. I am here to answer..
How long do you pressure cook potatoes for making the easiest mashed potatoes?
I pressure cook HIGH my potatoes for 8 minutes in my Instant Pot. It takes about 12 minutes build pressure. So in total, it takes 20 minutes for the potatoes to be pressure cooked.
If you are cooking in a manual Pressure cooker, Cook the potatoes for 3 pressure whistles and turn the cooker off. Allow them to release the pressure naturally.
HOW DO YOU QUICK PRESSURE RELEASE INSTANT POT?
Quick-release is the process of releasing the steam after cooking. To quick pressure release on the Instant Pot, carefully turn the valve from STEAMING to VENTING position. This will result in a strong jet of steam coming from the pressure release valve . Once the steam has released completely from the valve, the float valve will drop into the lid when the cooker has depressurised. I prefer to use a spatula to turn the valve.
It is now completely safe to open the Instant Pot lid.
Remember to keep your face away from the Jet of Steam!
Do I have to peel the potatoes for making garlic mashed potatoes ?
I would recommend scrubbing the potatoes, washing and then peeling the potatoes for mash potatoes. By doing so, the texture is smooth, creamy and fluffy without any off-feeling-textures.
But if you really don’t mind the different texture and a bit change in colour, then you can very well use the potatoes with skin on.
Do you need a steamer basket for making fluffier creamy garlic mashed potatoes?
I recommend using a Steamer Basket for cooking the potatoes, for making fluffy mashed potatoes. This step allows us to have the cooked potatoes without any water. Draining the water is also easy from the pot. I have the leverage to be approximate with amount of water added to the pot, instead of being accurate with this method.
If you decide to add the potatoes to the Instant Pot along with water, then I reckon you drain the water. You have to be precise with the amount of water added too. Otherwise your mashed potatoes can turn out soupy with all the additions.
What is the best potatoes for Mashed Potatoes?
It is extremely important to pick the right kind of spuds for making Mash Potatoes.
Choose the variety of potatoes that are starchy, fluffy
Russett or Yukon Gold in USA
Maris Piper or King Edward are the best spuds to choose in UK
How many potatoes do I need to make mashed potatoes for one person?
As a side dish, you will need 1/2 a pound of potatoes per person. So imagine you are serving for 6 people, you will need 3 pounds of potatoes.
1/2 a pound of potatoes = 252g potatoes
3 pound of potatoes = 1.36 kg potatoes
GADGETS NEEDED TO MAKE THE EASIEST MASHED POTATOES?
I do not recommend using an immersion blender or blender as such. Your mash will end up looking like a glue paste.
My two favourite gadgets to use are Potato Ricer or our good old Potato Masher. Use a bit of muscle workout to enjoy a delicious garlic mashed potatoes.
Can you freeze mashed potatoes?
This is one question, I often get asked. The answer is yes yes and yes as long as it is made with lots of butter and milk / cream.

BEST INSTANT POT GARLIC MASHED POTATOES RECIPE BELOW
Ingredients
Ingredients for Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- 2 lbs Potatoes 1 Kg
- 3 + 2 tbsp Unsalted Butter
- 5 cloves Garlic minced
- 1/2 cup Sour Cream
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp Chives chopped
- 1 Cup Water
Instructions
Instant Pot Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- Pressure Cook the Potatoes
- Pour 1 Cup of water to the instant pot insert. Place the peeled, chopped potatoes inside the steamer basket and place it inside the instant pot insert. Pressure Cook at HIGH PRESSURE for 8 minutes, followed by QPR.
- Remove the steamer basket with potatoes and allow the water to drain and set it aside.In the meanwhile, discard the water in the instant pot insert.
- Prepare Mash Potatoes
- Press SAUTE button. Once the indicator beeps HOT, add butter & garlic.. Allow it melt. Press CANCEL.
- Add the potatoes to the melted butter mixture and begin mashing with potato masher.
- When its half way done, add sour cream and mash again until smooth and creamy.Season with salt & pepper to taste.
- Taste and Season with more salt and pepper if needed. Transfer to a serving bowl, add a blob of butter, garnish with chives. Enjoy them on its own or as a holiday side dish.
Hob Method for Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- Add potatoes to a pot of salted water . Cook until tender approximately 15 minutes. Fork test the potatoes for its doneness., Drain.
- Heat butter, minced garlic over low heat in a sauce pan until butter is melted. Mash the potatoes well with a potato masher or potato ricer. Add the melted butter mixture along with sour cream and mix the potatoes well until mashed potatoes are smooth,creamy and delicious. Season with salt and pepper as needed. Taste and add more blob of butter if you would enjoy.

- PS: To deglaze the pan, add a splash of milk if needed.
- If you find your mashed potatoes too hard or clump like, add a splash of milk and mix it well.
- Reheat the spud mash before serving, if you are making it ahead of time.
- For variation, You can add cream cheese to this mash. But if you would like to make it with just milk, you can leave our sour cream from the recipe and just use milk.
