I make Idli Dosa batter frequently at home. Whenever batter is ready, Kuzhi-paniyaram and Uttapa are a regular breakfast / after school snack recipe in our household. It is so quick and easy, I like to prepare this onion uthappam instantly!
WHAT IS UTTAPAM?
Uttapam is thicker variety of dosa { lentil pancake } made with idli dosa batter. You can use store bought idli dosa batter available in any Asian Stores for a quick fix or make them at home too! I’ll share a detailed recipe soon on How to make your Idli Dosa batter at home and tips for fermenting them too.
Uthapam is such a staple recipe and surprisingly I haven’t shared them before with you. It is so quick and easy to make, that it can be prepared instantly when you have the batter ready. We like a variety of this thick dosa and all the variations depends upon the toppings you are going to add.

INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED FOR UTTAPAM RECIPE
To get started, you will need the following ingredients for Uttappam.
Idli Dosa Batter can be made at home or they are easily available to buy in Asian Grocer Stores.
Onion – Red Onion, White Onion or Shallots – Any of them work in this recipe. Remember to dice the onion really fine.
Green Chilli adds the perfect spice to this lentil pancake. However I like to omit them, when I am making it for my kids.
Coriander Leaves or Cilantro
For Onion Uttapa variations, you can add curry leaves and grated carrots too.
Oil – Sesame Oil or Vegetable Oil or Sunflower Oil – Use what is easily available at home.
HOW TO MAKE UTTAPAM STEP BY STEP?
Heat a griddle or dosa tava. Spoon in a ladleful of dosa batter.
Sprinkle the toppings mixture generously over the batter.
Add 1/2 a tsp of oil around the uttappam. Cover and cook it in a medium flame.
After 1 – 2 minutes , flip the uttapam and cook in low flame for another 2 minutes until onions gets golden and slightly crispy.
Serve the prepared onion uttapam with chutneys of your choice.
HOW TO SERVE UTTAPAM?
Uthapams are served with Coconut Chutney , Tomato Chutney & Sambar. But my little one just loves it with Ketchup. I have always loved indulging in rava idly, uttapam at Darshini Hotel and other pure veg restaurants in Bangalore, every time we visit India. They are one of my favourites on my MUST EAT recipes!

ONION UTTAPAM RECIPE | UTTAPA | UTHAPAM | MIXED VEG UTTAPAM

Ingredients
- 4 Cup Idli Dosa Batter
- 1 Cup Onion - red onion or white onion or shallots finely chopped
- 2 Green Chilli finely chopped
- 1/4 Cup Coriander leaves
- 12 Curry Leaves { Optional }
- 1/2 small Carrot, grated { Optional }
- Salt to taste
- oil for roasting
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, add onion, green chilli, coriander leaves and salt. Stir them to mix well together.
- Heat a griddle or dosa tava.
- Spoon in a ladleful of dosa batter.
