About these Indian Spicy Potato Chips
If you are a potato lover like me, you should really try making these Indian spiced chips at home. They take 5 minutes or less and need just 6 ingredients. I had to recreate the flavors we enjoy back home! You will also love the popular Air fryer Potato crispy slices, Chunky Chips, Parmentier potatoes and Bombay Potatoes.
Back in India, when you order Vegetable Biryani or seasoned rice, you’re often served these masala chips (as they’re called) along with onion raita in a few local restaurants, especially in the southern regions. Though simple, the combination is incredible, and I always find myself reaching for a second helping!
You can also find these spicy chips sold in small packets from corner shops in Bangalore and Chennai that make them fresh for you.
Note: In India and the US, "potato chips" refer to the same snack as "potato crisps" in the UK.
What Are Spiced Chips?
Potato chips or crisps are thin slices of potatoes, that deep fried, air fryer or baked until crunchy perfection. Spicy Potato Chips are potato chips / crisps, spiced up with South Indian spices. Tossed with salt, chili powder, and a few other key ingredients, they become a crunchy, spicy snack.
Whether you call them spicy potato crisps like we do in the UK or chili crisps as they’re known around the world, they’re the same irresistible snack.

Ingredients
- Potato crisps or chips – I use ready salted potato crisps from the supermarket, and I typically account for about 25g per person. If you have the time, you could make crisps / chips from potatoes, but the ready-made ones save time and effort when you want a quick snack.
- Kashmiri chili powder – This adds a bright red color, a mild, smoky heat and the perfect amount of heat.
- Salt – Just a pinch to bring out the flavors.
- Asafoetida – A small pinch gives a unique umami depth.
- Curry leaves – Fresh curry leaves are key for that aromatic South Indian touch.
- Oil – Just enough to fry the curry leaves, add a little grease and enhance the flavor. I use sunflower oil. you can use any other neutral flavored oil like olive oil. Coconut oil can have a bit of overpowering flavor, so I don't recommend it.
How to Make Indian Spicy Potato Chips at Home
- Pour the ready salted crisps into a mixing bowl
- Next sprinkle with chili powder, salt, and asafoetida. Toss gently.
- Heat a little oil in a pan and fry the fresh curry leaves until they sizzle. Once done, pour the flavored oil and curry leaves over the crisps.
- Toss everything together gently to coat the crisps evenly without breaking them.

For an authentic South Indian taste, I would not recommend swapping the flavors in the recipe and use the ingredients mentioned only.
Enjoy this for Netflix binge-watching or as a crowd-pleaser when entertaining guests—it’s always a hit!

- Other seasoning to try are Old Bay Seasoning, cajun Seasoning and Fajita seasoning.
- You can also use the same seasonings to spice up tortilla chips for a delicious alternative.
Serving Suggestions
- These spicy crisps are so addictive, you won’t be able to stop at just one.
- They make a fantastic nibble to serve with drinks.
- For a more filling meal, pair them with Indian rice dishes like Puliogare (tamarind rice), vegetable biryani, or vegetable pulao. They complement these dishes perfectly.

Storing
Store the spicy chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. They keep really well, staying crispy and flavorful, so you can enjoy them whenever you need a quick snack.
