Cabbage Peas Poriyal

Cabbage Peas Poriyal is a hearty healthy colorful VEGAN side dish often served along with Rice and a Sambar { A southindian Stew}. You may even enjoy the Poriyal with some wholesome Tortilla’s / Rotis.

Poriyal = Tamil word for Sauted /Stirred Vegetables.
This recipe first appeared in the Superfood Magazine.A few months back, I was absolutely blessed to have an opportunity to collaborate on a set of Vitamin/ Mineral rich recipes for the magazine. Since it was all about working on a healthy food recipe, It was extremely easy to put together a recipe that we cook everyday.

Cabbage Peas Poriyal is a wonderful side dish that pairs well with Sambar. There are umpteen variations to prepare sambar in different combinations of vegetables and the flavors are wonderful and comforting. Even today, as I type this post, my parents in law are cooking Cabbage Peas Poriyal to pair with Vatha Kuzhumbu. ( Manathankali Sambar Another variety of sambar that is cooked comfort food ).

The beauty of this South Indian Poriyal lies in the uniformly chopped cabbage. If you find it easy, you may shred them finely too. Often a lot of people ask – how does it matter whether its uniformly chopped or  just random dicing when all these vegetables need to get digested in the tummy eventually..

Well, firstly uniformly shredded/chopped vegetables cooks evenly. secondly the love and care gone behind preparing them lies in the beauty of these curry/poriyal.

I will leave you to enjoy a traditional Cabbage Peas Poriyal with absolutely no frills and flairs.

CABBAGE PEAS PORIYAL

SERVES 3| Prep Time: 5 Minutes | Cooking time: 20 Min

Cabbage Peas Poriyal

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp Coconut Oil

1 Tsp Mustard Seeds

1/2 Tsp Split Black Gram

1 sprig (10 No’s) of Curry Leaves

400g Cabbage, Washed and shredded

115g of Green Peas, thawed

1 Green Chilly

2 Tbsp Fresh Grated Coconut

Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS
Heat Oil in a Deep Bottom Pan and add mustard seeds. Once they crackle, add split black gram, curry leaves and saute for 25 seconds. Add Cabbage, Peas , salt and cook on medium flame, covered for 5 minutes or until cabbage is cooked.

Grind Coconut along with green chillies in a blender and add the coconut mixture to Cabbage Peas Poriyal.

Serve Hot along with Rice .

OPTIONAL

If you enjoy a little extra heat, add one more green chilly while grinding.
For a variation, add finely chopped onion in the initial step.
