Make this easy Air Fryer Mug Cake Recipe, and you will be treated to a delightful dessert that's quick and hassle-free! No eggs or butter? No worries! Grab your ingredients, and I'll show you how to bake a chocolate mug cake in your air fryer.

air fryer chocolate mug cake

This cake is so easy; you'll want to make it again and again. Making these chocolate mug cakes with kids in the air fryer is also a fantastic holiday activity.

Sometimes I bake two different flavours together - like a Strawberry Mug cake and a Chocolate cake for two of us. And the best thing is that I cook them together in my air fryer at the same time.

Mug Cake in the Air fryer

For a quick dessert fix, mug cakes are the ultimate solution! With just a mug and a few pantry staples, you can whip up a delicious chocolate mug cake in minutes, thanks to your air fryer. I love serving with Ninja Creami Vanilla Ice cream or Ninja Creami Chocolate Ice cream - so good!

💛Why You'll Love This Recipe?

  • Only 6 ingredients and ready in under 20 minutes from scratch.
  • You don't need eggs or butter to make this delicious mug cake recipe.
  • Making them in the air fryer is a lot quicker than in the oven.
  • Being eggless, this recipe is suitable for vegan and vegetarians, making it a versatile choice for any occasion.
  • Perfect as egg free single serve dessert.

👩🏻‍🍳Sandhya's Top Tips

  • Always check if the size of the mug that fits your air fryer. I use a 295 ml mug that fits pefectly in my air fryer.
  • Don't use Olive Oil. Use only neutral flavoured oil.
  • Always visually check the mug cake for any wet spots and ensure the cake is springy to touch. Check with a fork / tooth pick- if it comes out clean, your mug cake is ready!
  • If you see wet spots, always add another 1 -2 minutes of further cooking time.
  • If you have a larger air fryer, you can make multiple mug cakes simultaneously.

Don't have an air fryer - you can make mug desserts in your microwave too. Some of my favourite ones are Nutella mug cake made in microwave, Chocolate brownie in a mug and Mug Chocolate Chip cookie.

📋Ingredients

Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Ingredients to make chocolate mug cake in air fryer
  • Self-Raising Flour: also known as self-rising flour. To substitute with plain flour or all-purpose flour, add baking powder to it.
  • Sugar: I've used granulated sugar. Caster sugar also works.
  • Cocoa Powder: Good Quality unsweetened cocoa powder makes a difference in flavours.
  • Milk: I use any milk that's in the fridge - whole milk or semi-skimmed milk usually. Any plant-based milk will also work.
  • Oil: I've used Sunflower oil. Substitute with Vegetable oil.
  • Vanilla Extract: for added flavours.
  • Chocolate chips are optional - Add them if you like it chocolatey.

🔪How to Make Eggless Chocolate Mug Cake in Air fryer?: Step by Step Guide

add the dry ingredients in the mug.

Step 1: Add the flour, cocoa, and sugar. Use a fork to combine.

wet chocolate cake batter in the mug.

Step 2: Add the wet ingredients - milk, oil, vanilla extract, and mix well.
Then add chocolate chips on the top and stir briefly.

place the mug cake inside the air fryer basket.

Step 3: Preheat the air fryer for 2-3 minutes. Place the mug with the chocoate cake batter in the air fryer.

airfried chocolate mug cake in the air fryer basket.

Step 4: Cook in the air fryer for 13-15 minutes.
Tip: Check whether the mug cake is cooked through by inserting a skewer or toothpick in the middle of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is done.
If the skewer is wet or with moist crumbles, cook for a further 3 minutes.

I cooked for a total of 15 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Take the chocolate mug cake carefully from the air fryer using a kitchen towel or oven mitts. Allow it to cool for 5 minutes and serve on its own or enjoy with Ninja Creami vanilla ice cream.

🧂Storing Leftover Air fryer Mug Cake

Mug cake tastes best when served warm on the same day. If you plan to serve it the next day, always cover and store the cake in the fridge.

Before serving, heat the cake thoroughly in the microwave until it's warm, and then enjoy!

⏲️ Air fryer Cake Baking Time and Temperature

  • If you are wondering how long to bake your mug cake in the air fryer, it totally depends on the size of the air fryer.
  • I've found that baking the mug cake at 170°C (340°F) works best in most sizes of air fryers. For the air fryer mug cakes, I've used both Instant Vortex plus VersaZone 8.5L and Instant Vortex 6-in-1 6.5L.
  • The air fryer mug cake cooks slightly quicker in my 6.5L air fryer than in my 8.5L one.
  • Always visually check the mug cake for any wet spots and ensure the cake is springy to touch. Also, perform the skewer/toothpick test. If you see wet spots, always add another 1 -2 minutes of further cooking time.

Recipe FAQ's

Can any mug be used in the air fryer?

Most ceramic or heat-resistant mugs are suitable for use in the air fryer, but check your air fryer's manual to be sure. Look for an "oven-safe" label on the mug. Avoid using plastic or thin glass mugs. Also, make sure the mug fits in the air fryer without touching the sides or heating element so air can flow around it. I have used Denby Kiln blue small ridged mugs for this recipe with a capacity of 295ml.

Can you bake a mug cake in the air fryer?

Yes, you can absolutely bake a mug cake in the air fryer! Air fryers are versatile appliances that can be used for various cooking methods, including baking. Mug cakes are particularly well-suited for the air fryer because they cook quickly and evenly. Just like in a traditional oven, you mix the ingredients in a mug, place it in the air fryer basket, and air fry. It's a convenient and efficient way to satisfy your dessert cravings without heating up the whole kitchen.

Why did mug cake turn rubbery?

If Mug cake has turned rubbery, it is because you have mixed it too much, which can make it tough. Also, if you have cooked it for too long or at too high a temperature. Try mixing less and cooking for less time to get a softer cake

Hi Madhu, it depends on the model of the air fryer you're using. I use the Instant Vortex 6-in-1, and it preheats in about 2 minutes. Let me know how your air fryer chocolate mug cake turns out!
