Easy Puff pastry Vegetarian sausage rolls for Christmas

These Vegetarian Puff Pastry Sausage Rolls are an absolute must for the festive season! I can't believe I haven’t shared this recipe sooner—it’s a family favourite, perfect for Christmas parties, Halloween, or birthdays. They’re so easy to make with store-bought puff pastry dough or homemade puff pastry, and your favorite veggie or vegan sausages.

My daughter is obsessed with Greggs' vegan sausage rolls (and she’s keen to try Wenzel’s next!). But let me tell you, making your own with a tasty sausage mix at home is healthier and just as delicious.

These sausage rolls are always a hit— Simply wrap your vegetarian sausages in a puff pastry blanket, and bake / air fry until they turn beautifully golden brown.

Vegetarian sausages are versatile to use. You can make Air fryer sausages, Tortellini and Sausage Soup, Sausage Potato traybake , Sausage curry and more.

Why You’ll Love These Vegetarian Sausage Rolls?

  • Quick and budget-friendly with only 4 ingredients.
  • Perfect for vegetarians, and easily vegan with dairy-free milk and vegan sausages.
  • Packed with flavor—season the sausage mix with black pepper, herbs, and spices.
  • Ideal for any occasion—Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, or just for school lunches!
  • Kids can get involved and make them with little supervision, especially if using the air fryer.

Ingredients

ingredients for sausage rolls
  • Puff Pastry Dough: I use Jus-Rol sheets, but homemade puff pastry works beautifully too.
  • Vegetarian Sausages: Try Lincolnshire-style sausages from Linda McCartney or Cauldron, or go for Quorn’s veggie sausages.
  • Milk or Remaining Egg Wash: Either works great, and if you’re vegan, opt for plant-based milk.
  • Cheese (optional): For a twist, add a sprinkle of mozzarella or cheddar cheese inside.
  • Sesame seeds: Finish with a sprinkle of black and white sesame seeds.

How to make Vegetarian Sausage rolls step by step?

Prep the Pastry: Unroll the puff pastry dough and cut into strips. Place the sausages at one end, roll them up, and seal the edges.

Slice and Brush: Cut into equal portions, brush with the remaining egg or milk, and sprinkle sesame seeds if desired.

Bake: Arrange on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake at 180°C for 20 minutes until golden brown, or air fry for 12-15 minutes.

Prepare the puff pastry

Unroll the puff pastry sheet, leaving the backing sheet on. Cut the puff pastry horizontally across.

Line the sausages on one end of the pastry rectangle. Roll until they have completely wrapped over. Press the pastry ends to seal the edges.

Slice and Brish

Brush with the remaining egg or milk, and sprinkle sesame seeds if desired. Cut into equal portions of bite sized sausage rolls. Repeat the process with the remaining puff pastry.

Oven Bake the sausage rolls

Arrange on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake at 200°C for 20 minutes until golden brown.

How to make Air fryer Puff pastry Sausage rolls?

Making sausage rolls in the air fryer couldn’t be easier! Just wrap your vegetarian sausages in puff pastry, brush with milk or the remaining egg, and slice into mini sausage rolls. Sprinkle with sesame seeds for extra crunch.

Pop the rolls into your air fryer basket and air fry at 190°C for 12-15 minutes until golden and crispy.

Once done, transfer them to a serving dish and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce. It’s that simple!

Serving Suggestions

These puff pastry sausage rolls are even better when dipped in honey mustard, vegan burger sauce, or chipotle mayo—so good, you’ll want to try them all!

Sausage rolls are perfect for everything from picnics and garden parties to lunch boxes. They also make an irresistible snack for larger gatherings during the holidays, whether it's Christmas or Thanksgiving.

While I don’t usually serve them as a full meal, they’re fantastic paired with mash, roasted air fryer veggies, and gravy.

For Halloween, I love making spooky sausage mummies—you won’t believe how easy and fun they are to make until you try them!

Delicious Variations for Puff Pastry Sausage Rolls

Want to switch up your puff pastry sausage rolls? Here are some tasty ideas:

  • Add extra flavour by spreading apple chutney, onion chutney, or cranberry chutney inside the puff pastry before sealing the rolls.
  • Sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top of the mini sausage rolls for added texture and flavor.
  • Love Marmite? Brush a little inside the puff pastry before wrapping the sausage for a savory kick.
  • For cheesy goodness, sprinkle mozzarella or cheddar cheese over the sausage before rolling them up.

Vegetarian Sausage rolls - Hot or cold?

I would highly recommend eating warm puff pastry sausage rolls. The flaky pastry made with butter and the vegetarian filling needs to warm and melt to give us delicious rolls.

How to Freeze Puff pastry Vegetarian Sausage rolls?

You can freeze the vegetarian sausage rolls unbaked or baked.

Unbaked sausage rolls - Simply make the sausage rolls, do not brush the egg wash, and place them in a baking tray open in the freezer. Once they have frozen, place them in the freezer-safe bags. To cook, simply apply egg wash and bake from frozen in the oven.

Baked sausage rolls - Once cooled, place them in freezer-safe bags and freeze until ready to enjoy. To reheat, place the frozen sausage rolls in the air fryer/oven and cook until done.
