Why make this Bang Bang Sauce?
- Only 5 minutes
- Simple everyday ingredients
- Half it or Scale it up for a party
- Easy to make ahead
- Dietary needs – Suitable for Vegans, Vegetarians
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Mayonnaise: Use vegan or dairy-free mayo for a vegan version, or full-fat mayo if you’re not vegan.
- Sweet Chilli Sauce: You can make your own using a homemade sweet chili pineapple sauce, or use store-bought Thai Sweet Chili sauce.
- Hot Sauce: I prefer to use Sriracha , but any other hot sauce can also work.
- Garlic: Use garlic powder instead of fresh minced garlic, as fresh garlic may be too pungent for the sauce.
- Lemon Juice: Use Fresh or bottled lemon juice. You can also swap for rice vinegar
- Salt: Add salt to taste after checking the sauce’s flavour.
- Optional additions: Onion Powder, Maple Syrup
How to make Bang Bang sauce?
Place all the ingredients in a bowl. Whisk to combine until smooth. Taste and add salt as needed.
Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to serve.
Storing leftovers
In the Fridge: Store any leftover Bang Bang Sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. However, keep in mind that the mayonnaise base may cause the sauce to thicken over time. To prevent this, try stirring in a small amount of water or lemon juice to thin it out before using it again.
In the Freezer: If you have a large batch of leftover sauce that you won’t be using within a few days, you can freeze it for later use. Transfer the sauce to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
Thaw carefully: When ready to use, thaw the sauce in the refrigerator overnight. Avoid thawing it at room temperature or in the microwave, as this can cause the sauce to separate or become watery. Once thawed, stir the sauce well to recombine any separated ingredients. You may also need to add a small amount of mayonnaise or another thickening agent to improve the texture.
Bang Bang Sauce Variations
Spicy: Add some heat to the sauce by increasing the amount of hot sauce or adding some crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.
Curry flavor: Add mild curry powder to the sauce for a spicy and aromatic flavor.
Sweet : If you like a bit of sweetness in the sauce, add a little maple syrup, agave or honey to the sauce for a sweet and tangy flavour.
