About this Sweet Potato chaat

Also known as Shakarkandi chaat, this is one of my favourite ways to serve roasted potatoes. Our version of this chaat is healthy, as we are air frying the sweet potatoes until crispy. You can bake or cook them in a pan whichever you find handy.

If you love roasted sweet potatoes, you will also love Mexican roasted sweet potato cubes too.

We just can't stop with a smaller portion of this chaat. So we often enjoy them as a meal, mostly at dinner times. My husband loves a drizzle of yogurt on the chaat and then likes to top it with vibrant flavourful chutneys. My kids are massive fans of Indian street food and this one is also one of their favourites.

Indian Chaat is actually easy to make. If you already have the essential chaat chutneys - tamarind chutney ( imli chutney) and coriander chutney and roasted sweet potatoes, then the time taken to assemble is just 5 minutes.

This Air fryer Sweet Potato chaat has layers of sweet, savoury, and spicy flavours along with so many different textures. One spoonful of this chaat will give you a flavour explosion in your mouth.

Why you'll love this Air fryer Sweet Potato Chaat recipe?

Healthy - Sweet potatoes are air fried and not deep-fried. Most of the ingredients other than sev are healthy.

25 minutes - If you have chutney's ready, the overall time to make this shakarkandi chaat is just under 30 minutes.

Cheaper to Air fry than cook in the oven or on a pan. With the current rise in the electricity and gas bills in the UK, Air frying is cheaper to use.

Taste of India - Chaats give you the real taste of India with tons of flavors in a single morsel.

Versatile to serve - Serve on festive occasions like Diwali or Holi. They can be enjoyed as a healthy appetizer or a meal on weeknights or weekends.

Easy to scale up or half the recipe.

Dietary needs - Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy free

Ingredients

Sweet Potatoes - Here in the UK, we get Orange fleshed Sweet potatoes locally. I have used them for making roast potatoes.

Tamarind Chutney - You can make it at home with my recipe or buy Bhelpuri Chutney from Asian Grocery stores.

Green Chutney - I highly recommend you make it at home. Also, it takes only 5 minutes to make a lip-smacking chutney with coriander.

Peanuts - I like to use roasted salted peanuts for the crunch.

Onion - I prefer to use Bombay onion or Red onion for the recipe. Don't like the sharp taste, leave it out.

Spices - As for any chaat, I like to use Chaat masala, Ground Cumin, and Chilli Powder. For some recipes like this shakarhandi chaat, I also like to add kala namak ( Himalayan black salt).

Toppings - A sprinkle of the toppings Sev, fresh Coriander, and Pomegranate arils will make your chaat look so vibrant. Plus make it extra delicious.

How to make Sweet Potato Chaat step by step?

The recipe is simple and straightforward to make.

Wash, peel, and dice the sweet potatoes. Toss them with a little oil, salt, and chilli powder.

Roast in the air fryer at 200C / 400F for 10-12 minutes. Shake the air fryer basket at half-time, so that they cook evenly.

In a mixing bowl, add the air fryer roasted sweet potatoes.

Then the peanuts, onion, coriander chutney, tamarind chutney, cumin powder, kala namak, and chaat masala.

Toss together and then transfer to serving bowls.

Add the toppings - sev, pomegranate, onion, and coriander leaves. Serve immediately!

Optional - If you like add crushed chaat papdi and a drizzle of yogurt too!
