Easy Indian Onion Raita to serve with biryani and curries. This really simply Indian raita is made with onion, yogurt, coriander leaves, and green chilli. Plus it is ready in under 5 minutes.

Onion raita – Indian style

What is Onion Raita?

Onion Raita is an easy-to-make Indian yogurt sauce recipe made with only 5 ingredients. It comes together in just 5 minutes and is delicious to serve with Biryani or even Fried rice.

Although I make the Northindian style Pyaz Raita with spices, I also love indulging in this simple homemade raita.

We recently had the chance to enjoy a thali at Saravana Bhavan and the platter had this raita as one of the components. It was simple in flavors and so delicious that I did help myself to an extra serving.

Why you’ll love this recipe

Quick & Easy No-Cook Recipe – Most Indian raita sauce like this one does not require any cooking.

Healthy – Because this raita recipe has got no oil and is extremely healthy.

Flavorful – With basic seasoning and spices, this raita is extremely flavorful and delicious too. Plus the flavors also get better over the day.

Budget-friendly – Homemade raita uses cheap, easy-to-find ingredients from the supermarkets.

Dietary needs – The recipe is naturally vegetarian as it is made with yogurt. Sub for a Vegan Yogurt of your choice to make Vegan Onion Raita.

Serve – Delicious to serve with spicy curries, tandoori dishes, or even biryani.

Ingredients

You will need 5 ingredients and only 5 minutes to make this incredibly easy raita.

Yogurt – Always use full-fat yogurt to make a raita. Greek Yogurt will be too thick and it will require diluting.

Onion – Red or White onion works well to make raita. However, I prefer Red Onion in this recipe.

Green Chilli or Jalapenos -Finely sliced green chilli will add a bit of heat to this raita. If you don’t prefer that sharp heat, use jalapenos or 1/8th tsp of red chilli powder. Alternatively, you can just leave it out.

Coriander leaves – Finely dice the coriander leaves and use them in the recipe. Coriander leaves ( Cilantro ) play a huge part in this raita. Also, reserve small coriander leaves for garnishing. They look too pretty to serve.

Salt to taste.

Optional Ingredients – Ground cumin and Chaat masala

How to make Onion raita at home

First prep the ingredients – slice the onions, coriander leaves, and green chilli. Measure the yogurt and set it aside.

To make Onion raita for Biryani, add the yogurt, sliced onion, green chilli, coriander leaves, and salt in a bowl.

Stir together and chill until you are ready to serve.

PS – I also love to garnish with coriander just before serving again.

Tips to make the Best Onion Raita recipe

For every 1 cup of yogurt use 1/3-1/2 cup of Onion. This will give you the correct consistency of vegetable to yogurt in a raita sauce.

Use Chilled Yogurt to make raita.

Always use full-fat yogurt. I prefer to use Onken brand Stirred Yogurt as it doesn’t require any whisking. If you are using Greek Yogurt or Onken set yogurt, you will have to dilute them with water.

Red or White onion tastes great in this yogurt sauce.
