Why you'll love this recipe?

  • Quick and Easy: Simple and quick to make, requiring just a few basic ingredients. No cooking involved, making it an easy, hassle-free recipe.
  • Versatile: Easy to vary with your favourite herbs like coriander, mint or jalapenos or grated/chopped cucumber like in cucumber raita. Highly versatile, serving as a cool and savoury dip for a variety of dishes.
  • Easy to scale up or down: Perfect for those busy days when you need a flavourful sauce in a pinch. Make a small batch or whip one for the party - still just takes under 5 minutes.

Ingredients

You will need 6 basic ingredients to make the best Garlic Yoghurt sauce at home, easily available in your kitchen pantry or in your local super market. Its simple, no-cook recipe that goes perfectly with so many dishes.

  • Greek Yogurt: I prefer Greek Yogurt for its creamy texture, but feel free to use Natural Yogurt or Vegan Yogurt according to your taste. For a delicious twist, you can also substitute ¼ cup of sour cream.
  • Fresh Garlic: To achieve that perfect garlicky flavour, I use fresh garlic like my saffron cream sauce. If you prefer a milder taste, just use 1 clove or swap it with garlic granules.
  • Lemon: Adding fresh lemon juice creates a perfect balance of zing to the sauce.
  • Salt & Pepper: I add about ½ teaspoon of salt and black pepper, but feel free to adjust it to your liking.
  • Dried Mint: This is the secret ingredient that elevates the flavours. I make my own dried mint at home and store it in jars. It's super quick, taking just under 5 minutes.

Variations

  • Sour Cream: Enhance the creaminess by replacing ¼ - ½ cup of yogurt with sour cream. The result is a deliciously creamy twist on the classic sauce.
  • Thinner with Natural Yogurt: Substitute the greek yogurt with natural yogurt, and enjoy a lighter version of the sauce.
  • Fresh Herbs: Elevate the flavours with a variety of fresh herbs like mint, chopped dill, or parsley. Each herb brings its unique touch to the sauce.
  • Tzatziki: Add grated cucumber and plenty of dill to the sauce, and voilà - it becomes a delightful tzatziki! Add plenty of chopped dill to make dill yogurt sauce. Simply remove the garlic, throw in some diced cucumber, spices, and fresh coriander for an Indian cucumber raita.
  • Spicy: Add a pinch of smoked paprika, kashmiri red chilli powder, diced green chilli, or jalapenos for a touch of spicy flavors.

How to make Easy Yogurt Garlic Sauce: Step by Step?

Storing Garlic Yoghurt Sauce

To store the Yogurt Garlic Sauce, simply place any leftover sauce in a covered airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It should stay fresh for up to 1 week, allowing you to enjoy its delicious flavours whenever you like.

Recipe FAQ's

How long does homemade garlic yogurt last?

Homemade garlic yogurt sauce will last up to 1 week in the refrigerator when stored in an airtight container. Fresh ingredients like garlic can shorten its shelf life, so it's best to use it within that time for maximum freshness.

How do you make Indian yogurt sauce (Raita)?

To make a quick and easy raita, start by grating a cucumber. Squeeze out the excess water using a clean kitchen towel. In a bowl, mix the cucumber with yogurt, chopped cilantro, mint, and green chili (if you prefer a bit of spice). Let it chill in the fridge for at least an hour before serving for the best flavor.
