What is compote?
It’s a textured fruit sauce made with fresh fruit / frozen or dried fruit and sugar, cooked on the stove. Often flavored with a citrus element like lemon or lime or orange.
You also flavor the compote with vanilla extract, spices, balsamic vinegar, or even lemon/lime zest.

It is actually easy to make any tasty fruit compote at home. As such the recipe doesn’t need any pre planning and it is ready in about 15 minutes. When in a hurry, I make small batch compote which is just enough to serve.

UK supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, and Waitrose sell Bonne Maman Compote in Jars. Why buy Storebought Compotes, when they are way too expensive! You can easily make them at home at less than half the price for the jars.
Ingredients needed
This homemade mango compote has only 3 basic ingredients and there are no added preservatives.
Mango – Fresh and Frozen Mango pieces can be used to make compote at home.
Lime / Lemon – Either of the citrus fruits can be used to add the zing to the fruit sauce. Lime Juice and Lime Zest is added in the recipe.
Sugar / Maple Syrup/ Honey – Any sweetener of your choice can be used – my preference is Maple Syrup for its natural sweetness and liquid nature. However when Maple syrup is not available, I end up using white sugar.
How to make 3 Ingredient Mango Compote?
To make the compote at home, add the diced mango, sugar, or maple syrup, lime juice and lime zest to a pan. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Your homemade compote is ready!!
This recipe is as simple as that.
To add additional flavors, you can add lemon zest or lime zest. My family loves vanilla flavors, so I do like to add a splash of vanilla extract many times.

Uses of Mango Compote
Mango compote is easy to make, quicker than jam or jelly, and can be served warm or cold. You can use this simple fruit sauce over Waffles, Pancakes, French Toast, Overnight oats, Cakes, Cheesecakes, Sundaes – almost anything you fancy.

How to store compote?
Store the compote in airtight jars/mason jars in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Can you make compote with Frozen Fruits?
Yes, you can make compote with frozen fruits. There is no need to defrost them. Add the frozen fruit pieces along with sugar to a pan. Cook on the stove until they come to a boil and break down a bit.
Cooking time for the compote will be slightly longer when using frozen fruits. But the taste of frozen mango compote is just as good as the fresh ones!
How to make Compote in the Instant Pot?
Add the fruit, sugar to the inner pot of the instant pot. Pressure Cook High for 3 minutes. Natural pressure release. Add the lemon / lime juice and lime zest. Mash the fruits gently with a masher or stick blender. Enjoy Instant Pot Mango Compote!

- 1 Juice of Lime
- 1 Tsp Lime Zest Optional

- Place the diced mangoes, sweetener of your choice, lime juice and lime zest in a saucepan. Bring them to a boil over medium heat, stir frequently.2 Cup Fresh / Frozen Mango ( 330g ), 4 Tbsp Maple Syrup, 1 Juice of Lime, 1 Tsp Lime Zest
- Reduce heat and simmer for a further 10 minutes. Stir in between.
- For a smooth sauce consistency, use a stick blender or a masher and process. ( Optional)
- Remove from heat, allow it to cool and serve!
