What is compote?

It’s a textured fruit sauce made with fresh fruit / frozen or dried fruit and sugar, cooked on the stove. Often flavored with a citrus element like lemon or lime or orange.

You also flavor the compote with vanilla extract, spices, balsamic vinegar, or even lemon/lime zest.

The Vegan Mango Compote recipe with minimal ingredients

It is actually easy to make any fruit compote at home. As such the recipe doesn't need any pre planning and it is ready in about 15 minutes. When in a hurry, I make small batch compote which is just enough to serve 4.

Whether you are making pancakes or waffles for breakfast or thinking about how to make your dessert extra special, this spoonable sauce comes together with minimal effort and in a breeze.

UK supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Waitrose sell Bonne Maman Compote in Jars. Why buy Storebought Compotes, when they are way too expensive! You can easily make them at home at less than half the price for the jars.

Ingredients needed

This homemade mango compote has only 3 basic ingredients and there are no added preservatives.

Ingredients for Mango compote

Mango - Fresh and Frozen Mango pieces can be used to make compote at home.

Lime / Lemon - Either of the citrus fruits can be used to add the zing to the fruit sauce. Lime Juice and Lime Zest is added in the recipe.

Sugar / Maple Syrup/ Honey - Any sweetener of your choice can be used - my preference is Maple Syrup for its natural sweetness and liquid nature. However when Maple syrup is not available, I end up using white sugar.

How to make Mango Compote from fresh mangoes?

To make the compote at home, add the diced mango, sugar, or maple syrup, lime juice and lime zest to a pan. Bring it to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Your homemade compote is ready!! This recipe is as simple as that.

To add additional flavors, you can add lemon zest or lime zest. My family loves vanilla flavors, so I do like to add a splash of vanilla extract many times.

How to store mango compote?

Store the compote in airtight jars/mason jars in the fridge for up to 1 week.

Can you make compote with Frozen Fruits?

Yes, you can make compote with frozen fruits. There is no need to defrost them. Add the frozen fruit pieces along with sugar to a pan. Cook on the stove until they come to a boil and break down a bit.

Cooking time for the compote will be slightly longer when using frozen fruits. But the taste of frozen mango compote is just as good as the fresh ones!
